Held Together — Day 4: The Anchor

Held Together · Day 4: The Anchor
About 4 minutes. Listen, or read below.

Beloved,

Every second you've been alive, your body has been doing something extraordinary. Your temperature stays near 98.6. Your blood sugar rises and falls and returns. Your heart speeds up and settles. Your fluids, your blood pressure, your body chemistry are constantly pushed off center by life, and constantly pulled back.

Physiology has a name for that pull back to center: homeostasis. Balance, restored, over and over, without you ever asking for it.

Now read this slowly:

"And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." (Colossians 1:17)

The word translated consist means to hold together. Paul is saying that Christ is the One by whom all of creation keeps its coherence. The same God who designed your body to keep returning to balance is the One in whom all things are held.

This is what I mean when I say that anchoring to Jesus Christ is the key to maintaining homeostasis, not in one area of your life but in all of them together.

Think about what you've learned this week. Inflammation is a body pushed off center that can't find its way back. Hidden trauma is a soul pushed off center that never got to come home. And for so many of us the spirit is off center too, carrying weight we were never meant to carry alone and trying to be our own anchor.

You can work on one of those and still be pulled apart by the other two. That is why plans that treat only the body, or only the mind, or only the soul so often don't hold.

An anchor doesn't stop the storm. It keeps you from being carried off by it. "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast" (Hebrews 6:19).

So let me be clear about what this is, and what it isn't.

It is not faith instead of your doctor. Keep your doctor. Take the medicine you need. And it is not "just pray more." That advice has wounded too many people already.

But it isn't medicine instead of faith, either.

It's and. Nourish the body, and tend the wounds, and anchor the whole of you in Christ, so that when life pushes you off center (and it will), there is Someone steady to return to. Body, soul, and spirit, finding their way back to balance together, because they were made to be held together.

"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers" (3 John 1:2). Health and soul, in the same sentence. God never separated them. We did.

Today, one thing: Find five quiet minutes. Breathe in slowly, and on a long, unhurried exhale, pray one line: "Jesus, hold me together." Do it again. And again. Notice what your body does: your shoulders, your jaw, your breath.

Tomorrow: what it looks like to do this for your whole body, one system at a time.
